Her Bodies and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado

In her debut collection of short stories, Carmen Maria Machado breathes life into narratives of women’s bodies when violence is brought upon them.

I don’t have a long summary for this book because I read this in a fevor dream of two days becuase I couldn’t put it down. It was good, haunting, revelaing, and observant. “The Husband Stitch” is a great opening story and really sets the tone for the rest of the book. The story that has stayed on my mind has been the story of the writer at the art fellowship becuase of it’s shadowed prose and revelations.

I skipped the Law and Order SVU story becuase I didn’t get it. I wanted to understand but I have never seen the show, never had interest in the show, and it seemed like an experiment that only readers who know of the show would get. Otherwise, I thought this was a brilliant collection by a brilliant writer.

I’m reading her memoir now, so stay tuned for a review.
